CSU, NOAA Reinforce Forecast for Quiet Atlantic Hurricane Season

Atlantic Hurricane Outlook Confidence Grows

Forecast confidence is increasing that the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season will remain quieter than normal. Colorado State University and NOAA both maintained below-normal seasonal outlooks in their August updates, with a strengthening El Niño expected to produce greater vertical wind shear across the tropical Atlantic. Those hostile upper-level winds should make it more difficult for tropical systems to organize and intensify during the peak of hurricane season. The outlook suggests a lower overall risk of widespread disruptions to Gulf Coast and Atlantic energy infrastructure, although a quiet season does not eliminate the threat from an individual landfalling hurricane.
